Embassy of
Czech Republic ~ Washington, DC
 |
|
|

Dear Friends of Czech Culture:
The Embassy of the Czech Republic would like to
announce:
SPARK OF BRAVERY
Photo Exhibition by Alexandr Polo in Cooperation
with People in Need
This exhibition consists of 14 portraits of
Belarusian dissidents and activists and tells their
stories of repression under the authoritarian rule
of President Lukashenka, who came to power in 1994
after the reform-minded leader Stanislav Shushkevich
was dismissed on false corruption charges.
Shushkevich had been in power since September 1991
shortly after Belarus declared independence.
Lukashenka’s rule brought about a return to
Soviet-style dictatorship. During his thirteen years
in office, Lukashenka has dismissed Western
criticism of his leadership, instead focusing on
gaining tighter control and influence over all
aspects of Belarusian society. His Soviet-era
policies and ruthlessness have led the Western media
to label him as “the last European dictator.”
Unlike in other Eastern European countries,
political repression in Belarus is not history, but
reality. Belarus was one of the republics of the
Soviet Union that suffered the most from Stalinist
repression; no Belarusian family was left untouched
by the wave of terror. Today’s modern Belarus is
known for reviving political imprisonment,
incidences of politically-motivated disappearances,
and persecution of pro-democracy activists and their
families.
The current regime in Belarus violates the
constitutional rights of Belarusian citizens in many
ways – sometimes similar, sometimes different from
the ones that many Czechs remember from the
communist era in Czechoslovakia. A video testimony
(approx.50 minutes) featuring Belarusians was
created as a part of the exhibition.
This exhibition is also part of a broader project
initiated by People in Need. The official opening of
the exhibition took place during the conference on
“Trilateral Co-operation and Civil Society”, which
took place in Prague from 12 to 14 September,
organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the
Netherlands, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the
Czech Republic and the NGO People in Need.
People in Need
People in Need (PIN) is Czech non-profit,
non-governmental organization that implements relief
and development projects in crisis regions around
the world and supports human rights and democracy.
PIN has worked in Belarus since 1997, providing
financial support for the persecuted, sharing the
Czech experience of transformation through study
trips and raising awareness of human rights abuses.
For more information about Belarus projects see
www.peopleinneed.cz or contact bmu@peopleinneed.cz .
Hours: Monday through Thursday, 10 am- 5 pm; Friday,
10 am- 3 pm. Please schedule an appointment by
calling (202) 274-9105. The Embassy of the Czech
Republic is located at 3900 Spring of Freedom
Street, NW, Washington, DC 20008.

CSA ~ Czechoslovak Society of America

Dear Zora:
I am the chairman of the 72nd Annual CSA (Czechoslovak
Society of America) Get-Together being held in
Williamsburg, Virginia from August 1-3, 2008. In the
previous 71 years the Get-Together has never been held
in Virginia so this is an historic first. The Czech and
Slovak populations in Virginia are well-kept
secrets--mainly, I guess, because many did not directly
emigrate from Bohemia or Moravia or Slovakia, but rather
came here from other states because they heard there was
cheap farm labor and the climate is a little warmer. CSA
is a fraternal benefits society and we appreciate all
the support we can get. I am sending you a copy of our
ad agreement for the Get-Together program in case you
would be interested in showing support for our venture.
I am trying to involve as much of the Czech/Slovak
community beyond just CSA members. I have already
received ads from a Czech bakery and a Czech
restaurant--in fact, I found out about the Czech
restaurant through your newsletter.
Děkuji!

Cesky Den ~ Hillsboro, Wisconsin
 |
|

 |

Our Cesky Den "znak" - or crest, was recorded with
the State of Wisconsin
on March 27, 1985 as it became the logo for our
organization.
The design, illustrated by Karel Bilek, depicts two
song birds perched on an open
music book portraying the Hillsboro and Yuba Czech
Singers,
as the letters H and Y represent the two
participating towns.
A Cesky Den banner crowns a pictorial panorama of
Wisconsin's scenic beauty.
The dairy cow's head and the corn shock show our
agricultural heritage,
while the fish and deer stand for the great
recreational area Wisconsin has to offer.
The giant tree holds up the pictorial symbols while
it portrays some logging industry.
In Europe, these colorful crests represent cities,
towns, villages and also families,
telling historical illustrated stories of the people
and events they portray. |

Our task is to bring new artists, as well as to
extend the performance stay of those who are already
coming to the US and Canada, while saving on the
cost of transatlantic flights by sharing their
expenses.
The Czech Events Network is organizing an
information and co-ordination service about Czech
artists' availability for the Czech communities,
clubs and institutions in North America, as well as
for professional agencies representing Czech
artists. It has been creating a database of artists,
their agents and related cultural institutions in
the Czech Republic, as well as establishing an
Internet based matchmaking system, here, on our
specialized web site www.czechevents.net.
The key to our success is timely information about
future plans of tour organizers, professional
agencies, governmental institutions, associations,
clubs, orchestras and artists themselves. If they
let us know their plans for future, we could post
them on our web site and even actively market their
planed activities at the North American continent.

Do You Remember 1968? ~ Special Exhibit
 |
|
|

CEDAR
RAPIDS, IA –Beginning Friday, March 7th , the
National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library turns back
the clock to remember 1968: Twelve Volatile Months
that Changed the World. This original exhibition is
the only one of its kind in the U.S. commemorating
the 40th anniversary of 1968.
1968 was a year of worldwide turmoil. Vietnam War
protests sent shock waves through the U.S., Martin
Luther King Jr. and Bobby Kennedy were assassinated,
student revolts rocked France, and the riots outside
the Democratic Party National Convention in Chicago
were brutally subdued. In Czechoslovakia, unarmed
students faced down Soviet tanks marking the
beginning of the end of the Cold War.
Set in the global chronology of these turbulent
events, this original, multimedia exhibit explores
life in a communist country and the Prague Spring,
Czechoslovakia’s failed attempt at "socialism with a
human face." Visitors will experience controversial
politics, daily shortages, dissident art, rampant
propaganda, blatant censorship, and the suspicion
that comes with living in a controlled society.
Former Secretary of State, Dr. Madeleine Albright,
endorses the exhibit: "The Prague Spring was one of
the key events in the history of Czechoslovakia. It
is very appropriate that the National Czech & Slovak
Museum & Library – this wonderful museum that
represents the spirit of the Czechs and Slovaks
through history – should be honoring this historic
period."
A Gallery Tour led by exhibit curator Stefanie Kohn
will be given on Saturday, March 8 at 11:00 a.m. and
is included with the price of admission. Programs
and events, including the Czech and Slovak History
and Culture Conference, guest lectures, and
concerts, will occur during the run of the
exhibition and are lis |
